If the athlete’s swim is faster and run is slower than the approximate run time, but still falls under the combined time, then the athlete will be awarded funding for that level. The same follows if the athlete’s swim is slower then the approximate time and run is faster, but still falls under the combined total time, then the athlete will still receive funding. Total time trumps all.
For an athlete to secure funding for 2012 they are expected to race 2 out of the 5 following races: Saskatoon, St. Albert, Magog, Ottawa, Kelowna
Eligibility for Funding
Athletes are eligible to qualify for funding based on the following:
- Athletes must be Alberta Triathlon members in good standing
- Athletes must be born after January 1, 1993
- Athletes must have raced two Junior TECK series races in 2012
- Standards must be achieved between January 1, 2012 and August 31, 2012

a)Performances will be considered to the second, but not to the tenth of a second. For example, a 400m swim performance of 4:40.8 for Junior males would qualify as achieving the World Standard (4:40), while a 400m swim time of 4:41.0 would not qualify.
b) Athletes must be born after January 1, 1993 to qualify for funding.
SWIM PERFORMANCES
- Swim performances can be achieved in a 25m Short Course (SCM) pool, or a 50m Long Course (LCM) pool only.
- LCM swim times, which do not meet the World Standard, cannot be mathematically converted to SCM in order to achieve the World Standard.
- Swim times achieved at altitude, which do not meet the World Standard, cannot be mathematically converted to sea level to achieve World Standard.
- Performances from sanctioned Swim Alberta or Swim Canada events will be accepted.
- Open Water swims will not be accepted.
- Out-of-competition swim results will be accepted provided the following criteria are met:
- The performance cannot be achieved with the use of additional training equipment (ie. wetsuit, paddles, pull buoy, fins, etc) which would not be permitted in a sanctioned swim meet.
- The performance must be achieved by the athlete in the absence of drafting (ie. the athlete must be the only swimmer in the lane for the duration of the swim).
- The performance must be hand-timed (stop watch) by a minimum of two NCCP certified coaches, please check coaches certification with Athlete Development Manager, or a designate approved by the ATA’s ADM and the Executive Director of the ATA.
- The official performance time will be the slower of the two hand-timed measures, provided that the hand-timers are within 0.5 seconds of each other
- If the hand-timers obtain results differing by 0.6 to 1.0 seconds, their results will be averaged to achieve the official performance time
- If the hand-timers obtain results differing by more than 1.0 seconds, the performance will be invalid for the purposes of Canada Summer Games Team selection.
RUN PERFORMANCES
- Run performances can be achieved on an indoor (200m) or outdoor (400m) track at a certified track meet (ie. Athletics Alberta, Athletics Canada, IAAF), or on a certified running course. Run times achieved at altitude which do not meet the World Standard cannot be mathematically converted to sea level to achieve World Standard.
- Indoor track (200m) performances, which do not meet the World Standard, cannot be mathematically converted to outdoor track (400m) times in order to meet the World Standard.
- Out-of-competition run results will be accepted provided the following criteria are met:
- The performance must be achieved on a 200m or 400m track.
- The performance cannot be achieved using equipment, which would not be acceptable in a sanctioned road or track event.
- The performance must be hand-timed (stop watch) by a minimum of two NCCP certified coaches, approved by the ATA’s ADM or the Executive Director of the ATA.
- The official performance time will be the slower of the two hand-timed measures, provided that the hand-timers are within 0.5 seconds of each other
- If the hand-timers obtain results differing by 0.6 to 1.0 seconds, their results will be averaged to achieve the official performance time
- If the hand-timers obtain results differing by more than 1.0 seconds, the performance will be invalid
